前ページHitman ZERO the Assassin 気に入らない。47がその男を一目見て抱いた印象がこれであった。 学院の前でグリフォンという巨大な鳥の様な獣の側にいたその長髪の男は、ワルドと名乗り、ルイズの婚約者とも同時に言った。 ルイズもまた、その事を知っていたらしく、しかし、それでもここ数年顔を合わせていなかった事からか、やや気まずそうに顔を伏せる。 側にいたギーシュが言うのにはこのワルドという男、トリステイン王国の中でも名高いメイジであるとともに、魔法衛士隊、即ち軍隊の隊長をもつとめているという。 47の知らぬ内にトリステイン王国の王女、アンエリッタから極秘の任務をまかされたルイズに巻き込まれ、彼もまたアルビオン王国という浮遊大陸へ向かう事となっていた。 これにはルイズだけでなく、フーケ捕獲の時の功績を考慮し、キュルケ及びタバサが選抜され、さらに偶然この話を盗み聞きしてしまったギーシュも同行する事になった。 加えて、アルビオン王国までの護衛という名目で、このワルドという男も行動を共にするというのだ。 「初めまして。ミスタ47」 ワルドは恭しくも、貴族としての同道な立ち振る舞いを47に見せる。 「こちらこそ」 これに対し、47はあくまで短く、はっきりとした口調で応えた。 余りに端的に応えた47に、ルイズはやや不満げに眉をひそめてはいたが、やはり婚約者の手前、乱雑な所は見せたくないのだろう。 ところで、やはり一言言葉を交わしても、47の中で彼に対する評価は変わる事が無い。それどころか、益々どす黒いものが体の内側で広がって行く。 恐らく、周囲からは魔法衛士の隊長として、或は高名なメイジとして慕われているのだろう。 だが、心の内は、それで満足しているには到底思えなかった。野心に溢れている。決して、表に見せる事も無く。 47がそんな事を考えている事をワルドは知ってか知らずか、淡々とアルビオン王国までの経路を説明する。これから港まで移動し、其処から船で移動するのだと言う。 説明を手短に追えたワルドは、ルイズを手招きしながらグリフォンの背に乗る。それと、ほぼ同時に上空から一匹の青い竜が降り立った。 47は、その竜に見覚えがあった。広場で、良く他の使い魔と何やら会話の様なものをしていたそれだ。聞く所によると、タバサの使いで、シルフィードというらしい。かなりの大きさで、ちょっとしたプロペラ機程ある。 どうも、港までは空を飛んで移動するらしく、ワルドは婚約者であるルイズを手招きすると、直ぐにグリフォンを操って空に浮かんだ。 残された四名は、シルフィードの背に一列に並んで乗る。 これほどの人数が乗って大丈夫なものかと47はタバサを見やったが、一度小さく頷くとシルフィードの翼が羽ばたいた。 見る見るうちに学院が小さくなり、頬を冷たい風が叩く。既にグリフォンは先を飛行しており、シルフィードはそれに追従する形となった。 「全く、あんなにルイズとくっついて。一体何を話しているのやら」 道中、そんな嫌みをキュルケが発する。 これには、普段無表情のタバサも怪訝そうな表情を浮かべた。 確かに、彼女はよくルイズに対して冷やかしやら嫌みやらを吹っかけているのは違いない。 だが、隣で彼女たちの口喧嘩を良く耳にしているタバサは、そんな時でもキュルケの中に優しさに似た余裕があるのに気づいていた。 だからこそ、この時の彼女の中で、それが無い事にいち早く察したのだ。だが、シルフィードが揺れた事によって止む形無しに傾げた首を戻す。 「へぇ、珍しい事を言うものだね。どんな風の吹き回しだい」 その直後、ギーシュがまるで代弁するかの様に口を開いた。 「あら、貴方だってそう思うでしょ。突然ルイズの婚約者だなんて名乗る男が現れて、学院に土足で踏み入ってくるなんて」 ああ、とギーシュは口を開け手首を縦に振る。その意味する所を理解し得なかった47が、暫く移り変わる景色を目で追っているとタバサが独り言の様に話し始めた。 そもそも、この極秘任務のメンバーは、アンエリッタ王女から直々に命を承ったルイズと、その護衛にあたるワルドの二名だけであった。 それは、グリフォンに搭乗出来る人数制限からもあったのだが、ルイズが自身の使い魔、47も連れて行くべきだと提言した。 更に、それだけでなくタバサ、キュルケも連れて行った方が良い、と。 その会話を盗み聞きしてしまったギーシュはとばっちりを受ける形での参加である事は違いなく、結果、五名にまで膨れ上がったメンバーを見て、ワルドが表情を曇らせる。 幾ら、フーケを捕らえた功績があるとは言え、学院の、まだ生徒であるという事実は揺るがない。 要するに、ワルドからしてみれば未熟者なのだ。そんな連中まで、護衛しきる事は出来ない。彼女達を前にワルドははっきりと言った。 「あら、私達の身は私達でちゃんと守る事が出来ます。ご心配される程ではありませんよ」 まさに自分たちは足手まといの他ならない。そんな言われ様に、キュルケが真っ向から噛み付いた。 ワルドはただ、彼女たちに睨みを利かせるに留まる。 ルイズが、キュルケを推した事、自分の使い魔を連れて行く事は義務だ。そして、その為には別に空を飛ぶ移動手段が無くてはならない。 まさに、シルフィードは適任だ、という事でワルドはようやく彼女達の同行を認めるに至った。最後に一つ、自分の身は自分で守れ、と付け加えてから。 その直後にいつも通りの朝食を終えた47が来た、という訳だった。 「どうも、重要なタイミングに居合わせる事が出来ないな」 「ええ。でも、その重要な事にどうしてか巻き込まれちゃう」 「……ふん、違いない」 キュルケの的確な指摘を、47は頷きながらも含み笑いで返す。 視線を前に移すと、ワルドの背中にしっかりとしがみつくルイズの姿があった。 今、一体何を思っているのか。背中しか見る事の出来ない47には、到底理解し得ない。 ※※※ 彼らの示していた港、というのは47の想像するそれとは少しばかり違っていた。 船は船でも、海を浮かぶ船ではない。空を飛ぶ船であった。それも、まさしく帆船のような形状に、47は驚きを隠せない。 やはり、原動力は魔法なのだろうか。シルフィードから降りて、47は一人港で船を眺めていた。 既に日は沈みかけている。暫くは船が出ないと、此処についてから知らされた。 恐らく、必要な積み荷が揃っていないだとか、原動力になるものが足りていないと言った理由だろうが、詳しく知ろうとは47は思わない。 「奇麗な夕日」 暫しぼんやりとしていると、タバサが、側に歩み寄ってきた。 「貴方も、こういうのは見て惹かれるのね……」 「ああ」 抑揚の無い口調での質問に、やはり抑揚の無い口調で応える。 誰かと思い、47は辺りを見まわす。 ここ最近、一人で物思いに耽る事が多くなっていて忘れていた。背負っている剣が、インテリジェンスソードである事に。 「死んでいたかと思った」 「おいおい相棒。酷い事言うなよ。そっちがずっと恐い顔して何か考えてたから、一向にこっちから話す機会が無かっただけだぜ」 「ああ、すまないな。これからはお前にも色々相談しよう」 「へへっ、無駄に長生きしているからな。人生相談ぐらいならのるぞ」 久しぶりに聞くその声に違和感を覚えながら、47はデルフリンガーの皮肉をいなす。 「さて。ミスタバサ。俺は即金でしか動かない」 「分かった。この任務が終わってから、詳細を伝える。……そろそろ宿に戻らないと」 「ああ」 彼女とて、47の言わんとする所を理解した上でこのような頼み事を言っているのだろう。 それでも、眉一つ動かさずに言えるその度胸に、47はある種の恐ろしい感覚を覚える。 二人が踵を返し宿に戻ると、広間でやや険悪な雰囲気のキュルケとワルド、そしてその二人に挟まれ困惑するルイズが出迎えた。 何でも、部屋割りでもめているというのだ。ワルドは、婚約者であり、当初のメンバーでもあるルイズと相部屋になるのは至極当然だと主張する。 一方のキュルケはルイズとはまだ婚約者でしか無く、何より学院の生徒だ。ワルドは、同性で、比較的年齢の近い47と相部屋になる方が健全だと主張し、真っ向から意見が食い違っていた。 ルイズからしてみれば、憧れの存在であるワルドの顔も立てたいし、同じ学院の生徒で、今回の様な無茶な任務にも嫌な顔ひとつせずついて来てくれたキュルケも無下に出来ないのだろう。 三人は戻って来た47とタバサには気づいていないようだった。もっとも、タバサはそれを然程気にする様子も無く広間の隅の椅子に座り、本を読みふける。 だが、47にしてみればこれ以上喧噪を続けるのは好ましいとは思えない。宿屋の主人も相手が貴族とは言え、良い顔をしていなかった。では、果たしてどちらの肩を持つべきなのか。 横目でワルドの顔を見る。相手を卑下する歪んだ目をしていた。彼に取っては、この旅での47達はオマケですら無く、只のお荷物なのだろう。 そんな人間が、自分の主の婚約者を名乗る。あまり、いい気持ちはしなかった。 「ミスタワルド。幾ら俺の主と結婚の約束をしているとは言え、まだ婚約者でしかない。 この旅は、そういった意味でしているのではないのだが……。此処は男同士、健全に相部屋になった方が良いだろう」 幾ら人気が無いとは言え、この宿を利用する人間は幾人かはいる。そんな中で極秘任務の事を少しでも漏らすべきではない。 上手い具合に隠しつつ、47はキュルケの後押しをした。 ワルドの顔に、微妙な変化が生じる。47の冷たく、淡々とした声が、逆にその場にある一定の結論をもたらしていた。 ルイズは、驚いた様に47を上目遣いで見て、キュルケは彼に対してウィンクをする。 「君は、ルイズの使い魔だろう……。主人より先走って、貴族に進言するのはどうかとおもうよ」 「ああ、そうだな。ならば、今までの内容を含めて、彼女に決めてもらおうか」 47の視線が、ルイズに向けられる。 「……すみません。今は、まだ……」 ほんの少しだけ、その視線に彼女は怖じ気づいて頭を垂れるが、ワルドの方を向いて、答えを発する。 はっきりとした口調ではなかったとは言え、其処からは間違いなくワルドを拒否する事が含まれていた。 「そう、か。本人がそういうのなら仕方が無いのだろう……」 顔をしかめて、ワルドは椅子に深く座り直す。だが、その直後、鋭い視線が47を貫いた。 47は、表情こそ変えなかったが、そこから、彼自身に対して向けられる憎悪や嫉妬の念がある事に気づく。 やはり、貴族というのはどれも変わらないのか。虚しい気持ちが己の中に広がるのを感じながら、ワルドが次に放つ言葉を待つ。 「何度も言うが、私は彼女の婚約者だ。彼女を守る義務がある」 「それは、俺とて一緒だ」 「君の言っているのは使い魔としての義務だよ。召喚の儀式で呼びされたのが、君の様な平民風情でなければもっと話がはやかったんだけれどね」 「何が言いたい」 「……一介の、平民の使い魔ではこれから彼女を守って行く事は、先導する事は出来ないんだよ」 少々話が飛躍している様に47には思えて仕方が無かったが、相手はすっかり激情しているようだった。 要するに、プライドとやらを踏みにじられてご立腹なのだろう。何時ぞやの少年貴族を思い出して、ギーシュの様子をうかがう。 「僕の時と同じ様に、やってしまえ」 その目は、そんな事を言いたげであった。 ※※※ 夕暮れ時、ルイズの部屋をノックする者がいた。シーツを抱えた、シエスタであった。表情を少しばかり曇らせ、ドアを開ける。 誰もいなかった。この時間なら何時も47がいる筈である。少しだけ戸惑って、足を踏み入れた。 何時もより、部屋が整頓されている様にも思える。そういえば、早朝学院の門の前でルイズと47が、タバサにキュルケにギーシュ、そして、グリフォンを引き連れた一人の貴族と共にいた。 多分に何処かに出かけてしまったのだろう。人気の無いその部屋で、シエスタはベッドにシーツをかける。 手慣れた筈の動作だが、やはりぎこちない。どうしても、47の事が頭から離れずにいた。 「やっぱり、今度あったらちゃんと聞こう」 ふと、窓が揺れる音が響いて、顔を上げる。しかし、誰もいない。その向こう側で、自分たちの使い魔と戯れる貴族の姿が見えるだけだ。 「あら、相変わらず仕事に精が出るわね」 直後、背後に人の気配を感じ、驚いて振り返る。 何時の間にか、其処にフードを被った女性がいた。しかも、その声には聞き覚えがある。 間もなく、それが誰なのかを思い出し、シエスタは目を丸くした。 「まさか……ミスロングビル、いえ、つちくれのフーケ……」 「そう、その通りよ。あ、でも安心して。別に貴方を襲いに来た訳でもないから。ちょっと、47に用があってね」 学院でオスマンの秘書をしていた時に比べて何処かくだけた様な物言いに、シエスタは脇を軽く小突かれた様な気がした。 本来なら、侵入者を見つけたと、大声で叫ぶべきなのだろう。ところが、余りのも突拍子も無い出来事に、そんな気持ちすら何処かにいってしまった。 何より、彼女が此処にいる理由が、気になって仕方が無い。 「あの、ミスタ47に用、とは……」 此処で、シエスタははっとなる。フーケは、堅固な牢獄から脱獄していた。 その余りの鮮やかさに、誰か手引きをした者がいる筈だと、噂される程に。 「随分鋭いわね。ま、貴方の想像している事でだいたい正解よ。私は逃がしてくれる代わりに、ある事を調べてほしいって頼まれたの」 「……ある事?」 「そう。さっきの一言を聞く辺り、貴方も気づいているでしょう。彼が、平民なんかじゃないって」 ずい、とフーケが詰め寄る。 「じゃあ……」 「分かっているわよ。こっちも、一応秘書やっていたからね。でも、今はそれが問題じゃなくて」 「あの……!」 フーケの言葉を遮る様に、シエスタは強い口調で言葉を紡ぐ。一体、どんな事を調べてきたのか、と。 「どうして気になるのかしら」 「ミスタ47だけの事ではないんです。だから……!」 先程までの明るい表情とは打って変わり、鋭い視線でフーケは尋ねる。だが、シエスタも一向に退く気配を見せない。 涙目になりながらも、必死に訴える。最早、最後の方は言葉が消えかけていた。それでも、シエスタは食らいつく。 此処で機会を逃したら、二度と彼の本当の事を知る事は出来なくなるだろう。内心、そんな事を思いながら。 「へえ。案外色物好きなのね。ふふ……私から話しかけた事だし。良いわ。教えてあげる。 その代わり、この話を聞いたらちょっと手伝ってほしい事があるから、ね」 そう言いつつ、シエスタがたった今シーツをかけたベッドに腰掛けた。首元で結ばれていたフードの紐を外し、ややラフな格好をとる。 一方のシエスタは、彼女の一言一句、髪の先程の動きも見逃さないが如く、全く身動きを取らない。 緊張のあまり、動けなくなってしまったかの様にも見え、フーケは軽く笑顔を見せてから話し始めた。 「まずね、レコンキスタっていう組織を調べていたのよ。そうしたら、面白い事にこの組織、アルビオン王国のクーデターを計画しているらしくてね。まあ、要するに革命集団て言う所かしら」 「……」 「47が調べてほしいって言っていたのはもう一つ。多分、貴方も知っているでしょうけど、クローンて言う言葉。 実は、そのレコンキスタに最近加わった人間がいて、その人の名前がクローン・エフエスっていうのよ。……見事な一致でしょう。どんな人間かまでは分からなかったけども」 ここまで言い、一旦フーケは懐から水の入った袋を取り出し、口に含む。 「それで、わざわざ此処に今日出向いたのは、レコンキスタの動きが最近妙に活発になっていて、アルビオン王国で革命が起きるのも時間の問題みたいで。 どうしてか調べてみて驚いたわ。どうもあのワルド子爵がレコンキスタに関わっているの」 「……え」 ワルド、直接顔を見た事が無いが、その名前はシエスタも聞いた事がある。 トリステイン王国に属するグリフォン隊の隊長だ。魔法使いとしての腕前も非常に高く、様々な人に慕われている。 そして、ルイズの許嫁だとまことしやかに噂されている人物。 ここで、シエスタは小さな悲鳴を上げた。 そうだ、今朝、ルイズの側にいた男は誰だったか。47ではない。身なりからして高位のメイジだろう。 そして、側にいたのは一匹のグリフォンだ。丁寧に整えられた羽、気品すら感じられるその佇まい。普通のグリフォンでは無かった。 その事を、慌ててフーケに伝える。確信は無かった。だが、途端にあの場にいた一行の事が心配で溜まらなくなる。 「成る程ね……彼も結構良い度胸しているじゃない」 「ど、どうしましょう……」 「十中八九、ルイズ達はアルビオン王国に向かったでしょうね。きっと王国からの極秘の任務だったんでしょうけど、流石にグリフォンに乗って登場しちゃあ目立つ。 どこかで、彼女達が王国に向かうって情報が漏れていたのかしら。それで、ワルドが先回りをした、と。嫌な予感がするわ……。 ねえ、さっきも言ったんだけど、ちょっとした悪戯に手伝ってもらえないかしら」 口角を上げて、フーケが笑顔を作る。だが、その瞳の奥には表情とは裏腹に、焦りの色が見え隠れしていた。 突然、告げられた事実に困惑を隠せないシエスタであったが、彼女が首を縦に振るのには、そう時間もかからなかった。 前ページHitman ZERO the Assassin
